As the rumor mill churns

For Weekly SurgeJune 19, 2012

News breaking out of California, according to multi-media news source The Hollywood Reporter, is that 100, full-sized, limited-edition “Son’s of Anarchy” Harley-Davidson motorcycles are going to being created by Bartel’s Harley-Davidson. Located in Marina Del Ray, Calif., the dealership has built motorcycles used in feature films such as “The Terminator” and “Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man.” If it is true, these “Sons of Anarchy” bikes will be in high demand by the show’s rabid fans.

The series, entering its fifth season is the most-watched show ever on the FX cable network among the coveted 18-49 year old so-called “disposable income” demographic. “Sons” as it is also known is a high-octane drama about a fictional, murderous, gun-dealing motorcycle club who rules the also fictional, small town of Charming, Calif. The show stars award-winning actress Katey Sagal, best known for her role as Peg Bundy on “Married: With Children” and Ron Perlman of the “Hellboy” movies. Five-and-a-half million people per episode tuned in last season.

According to the story online, the motorcycles will retail for about $25,000.00 and are going to be made available in conjunction with this year’s annual Black Hills Rally in Sturgis, S.D. in August. The rally takes place right before the season five premier of the show in September. There were no details or specs included about the actual bikes. This news was obviously not supposed to be out yet though. I contacted Bartel’s Harley-Davidson to try to confirm the Hollywood Reporter story and the woman I spoke to had more questions for me about how I heard about the bikes and who I was, than I had for her about the bikes. She awkwardly said she had no comment, but she’d check with a few people and I could call her back the next day. She knew more than she was saying. When I called back the following day she told me she couldn’t give me any details about the bikes, accidently suggesting they are indeed in the works, and that everyone would just have to wait for more details to come in the future. I was not able to reach anyone at 20th Century Fox, producers of “Sons of Anarchy,” for comment so we’ll all have to be on the lookout for more information later.

Locally, The Beaver Bar hosted one “Sons of Anarchy” supporting cast member during the recent spring motorcycle rally. Michael Ornstein, who plays Chucky Marstein on the show, mingled, made appearances and signed autographs at the Murrells Inlet County Line location. Owner Leslye Beaver said, “He could not have been nicer and he seemed to really enjoy the area and the rally.” Beaver, who flew the actor in for the appearances, hopes he will go back and share his enthusiasm with other stars from the show in hopes of getting some of the actors that play the main characters to come back to the Grand Strand with him in the future.

Not monkeying around

As one local biker-friendly establishment re-opened another may have closed, so I did my best impression of Surge restaurant/food writer/reviewer Becky Billingsley. Not long after bikers were celebrating the grand re-opening of The Dead Dog Saloon (4079 U.S. 17 Business in Murrells Inlet) during Bike Week last month following a devastating fire, posts started popping up on Facebook about another biker favorite closing down. According to the rumor mill, Beach Monkey’s Deli and Raw Bar at Salem Junction at 10785 S.C. 707 in Murrells Inlet had closed. There was no answer when I called the bar’s phone number so I went to see for myself. There was no sign on the door and I couldn’t see through the mirrored windows so imagine my surprise when I pulled on the door handle and it swung open. I was met by one worker inside who was busy renovating the space. While there was some behind-the-scenes drama we’re not all privy to, I was able to confirm with the building’s owner that the place is being fixed up and that a bar in the Beach Monkey’s location should re-open again by the end of June. Whether or not it will still be named Beach Monkey’s remains a mystery, but what we do know is that the renovations include relocating the bar towards the back of the building, making it more server-friendly, expanding the stage area and creating a larger dance floor as well as a general facelift.
