THE LOCALE | Tropical Bar & Grill
THE LOWDOWN | We’re all about trying new things, so we were thrilled to hear that a Puerto Rican joint had opened up in Myrtle Beach. In hopes to learn more about Puerto Rican food, drinks and culture, we headed over to Tropical Bar & Grill in Myrtle Beach for happy hour this week.
You'll find Tropical Bar & Grill in downtown Myrtle Beach near Time Out! and Club There (in the former Cafe M location). Inside, paintings of beach scenes hang on the gray and sea-green walls, reminding you of just how beautiful Puerto Rican beaches can be. There's a small bar, a pool table, and tables and chairs, which get moved out of the way at night when people start to dance.
During the day, the locale is laid back and family friendly (complete with a kids’ menu) and then at night, it turns into a party with music and dancing. On Friday nights the deejay plays international and dance music, and on Saturdays the Latin Night Dance Parties start at 10 p.m. with salsa, merengue, bachata and reggaeton music.
But you don't have to dance to visit Tropical Bar & Grill. If you like to drink and/or eat, you'll be perfectly content inside this bar and grill. The food is great, from the roasted pork and plantains to the Pastelillos de Camarones (shrimp turnovers). Other popular menu items include Alcapurias (stuffed bananas) and Vaso de Pulpo (cup of octopus). Traditional Puerto Rican drinks include Mojitos, Rum and Coke (with Don Q Rum from Puerto Rico) and Limoncello, which comes in lemon and orange flavors. Some patrons come for the selection of beers, which includes Guatemalan and Israeli beers.
Head to Tropical Bar & Grill for happy hour which starts at 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays (closed on Sundays). Drink deals include $2 domestic beers, $3 imports and $3 well drinks. And remember that delicious Limoncello we mentioned? You can snag those all day everyday for three bucks. (But beware, they'll sneak up on you.)
