THE LOWDOWN | Just in time to welcome college kids back to the area, SoHo University opened its doors at its near-campus location. We decided to check out the brand new bar this week for happy hour.

SoHo University is just a hop, skip and a stumble away from Coastal Carolina University's campus and student housing. As the sister to SoHo Cafe and Bar on 21st Ave. N in Myrtle Beach, the establishment already has a following of sushi and sake lovers. If the food and drinks don't bring newbies in, maybe the music will. SoHo University turns into a dance club at night with DJs and live music.

You'll find a college crowd belly up to the bar for drinks and food. The locale is spacious with a dining area on one side, a dance floor on the other and a large rectangular black granite bar in the middle. Flat panel TVs are everywhere.

Happy hour runs from 4 p.m.- 7 p.m. weekdays. Specials include $2 vodka, $2.50 well drinks, $2 sake and $2 domestic beers. Food deals include 50-cent wings, oysters, clams, mussels and shrimp. You can also snag $5 sushi rolls and $5 appetizers such as chicken tempura, Thai chicken fingers, hummus and calamari.
