A Weekly Review of The Strand’s Happy Hour Scene

THE LOCALE | Lumpy's Bar & Grill

THE LOWDOWN | You have probably driven right by it, but if you take the time to look for Lumpy's Bar & Grill, you'll be glad you found this hidden gem set off of Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island. That's where we went this week for happy hour, and we are already planning a return visit.

Lumpy's Bar & Grill is a cozy bar with a friendly staff. You'll feel like you’re in the living room of your house. In fact, the establishment was a house. Now a pool table sits in one room, a bar in the other, and a fireplace remains in the main area. The decor has a hunting and fishing theme. You'll see fishing reels, deer antler and alligator skulls. Yes, they are real skulls...the owner has killed a couple hundred gators so far.

Out back, underneath the large oak trees, there is a live music venue where you can hear bands and acoustic music every weekend. On Fridays there is typically a solo or acoustic act starting at 8 p.m. On Saturdays you can hear full bands playing various genres of music, such as reggae, funk, rock and southern rock.

The polished casual place brings out an eclectic crowd of all ages. Every other Thursday Lumpy's hosts food cook-off competitions. Also on Thursdays you can sing karaoke. If you need help curing a weekend hangover on Sunday, head to Lumpy's for the make-your-own Bloody Mary bar and brunch. On Filet Fridays you can enjoy hand cut filets sized and cut to order. The full menu includes signature dishes such as crawfish, the Lumpy burger and gumbo.

Happy hour runs from 4-6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Drink deals include $1 discount on all liquors, making well drinks $3, and $1 discount on beers, making them two bucks. You can also find drink deals that vary, for example $1.50 PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon) or $6 martinis. Happy hour food deals include 50-cent wings and a chef's choice daily appetizer special.

TIPS | Lumpy's Bar & Grill serves late night food until 2 a.m. It is located across from Food Lion on Ocean Highway.
