Volition Fashion Design & Artist Showcase at X-Con

Calling all fashionistas: Resolve yourself into a fantasy land of fashion, makeup and hair design Sunday at the Volition Fashion Design & Artist Showcase, held in conjunction with X-Con World VI at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

You don’t have to be a geek to enjoy this fashion chic event, which is slated for 5-7 p.m. as the finale event of the three-day comic book/sci-fi/fantasy convention.

Renee Marie, a Myrtle Beach based multi-genre artist and founder of Mirror Makeup Artistry, created the concept behind the fashion show and is coordinating the event. She says attendees can expect a showcase that features fashion styles from all walks of life.

Volition is defined by Dictionary.com as the act of willing, choosing, or resolving. The Volition Fashion Design & Artist Showcase is intended to illuminate the meaning of the word volition through fashion, makeup and hair design.

“I believe in diversity. In art, in life, and pretty much everything. Volition is a classic word that is hardly used commonly and can mean many things. That's a main reason why I was drawn to using it for this event. So many people see the word ‘volition’ differently. I'd like to explore how that word translates in the creative world,” she says in an e-mail describing the upcoming fashion showcase.

A distinctive list of fashion designers and artists will be participating in the event, including accessory and jewelry designer Amanda Hailey of Pawleys Island, artist Eliana R. Arenas who creates wearable works of art, 3thimbles which specializes in eco-friendly organic couture, and many more.

The highlighted designer for the evening is Haenuli, a South Korea-based fashion designer that specializes in Lolita fashion, a Japanese fashion subculture based on Victorian-era clothing.

Hair and makeup for the fashion show will be created in part by a full team of beauty professionals from the Myrtle Beach and Wilmington, N.C. locations of Carmen! Carmen! Salon e Spa, and a group of freelance professional makeup artists.

Marie says a variety of looks will be shown on the runway during the fashion show, with two designers showcasing four large and intricate designs, while other designers and artists will showcase between 10 and 20 designs. Attendees can immerse themselves in an imaginative world of bold, natural and relaxed looks ranging in styles including organic couture, steam punk, Lolita, vintage inspired swimsuits, and more.

During intermission, Yoga in Common of Myrtle Beach will give a yoga demonstration, and Plan B, a local theatrical troupe, will perform a selection from “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
