Who says you can’t get anything for free? Well, you can on Free Comic Book Day which is Saturday, and local comic shop X Con Comics is going all out, offering up free comic titles, activities and all things geeky cool from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with activities shifting to Nerd Bar in the evening. X Con Comics at Palmetto Studios is at 807 Main Street, Myrtle Beach. “Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) is the biggest event in the comic book industry,” states a press release issued by Diamond Comic Distributors. “The comics are from great publishers, featuring classic and new characters, great stories, and amazing artwork that everyone will love. The comics for the 2014 FCBD are from top publishers, featuring new and classic characters and great stories including Teen Titans Go!, SpongeBob, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Simpsons, Transformers, and many more that are great for both adults and kids.” Coastal Comics, 9261 SC 707, Suite D in Burgess, Player’s Choice,10177 N. We’ve lost track of how many names this event has had through the years, but it’s now going under the moniker of the Rivertown Music & Craft Beer Festival in downtown Conway, and that’s alright by us. The rebranded street festival features two stages of entertainment, a classic car show, vendors and a craft beer tasting zone with more than 80 brews to sample. Performers include Paperwork at 3 p.m., Steady Hand String Band at 5 p.m., Jesse Rice at 6:45 p.m. and The Mullets at 8:30 p.m. Festival hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday. Want to see boxing up close and personal but can’t make a last-minute trip to Vegas? Then head over to Cinemark 14 at Coastal Grand Mall as “The Moment: Mayweather vs. Maidana” will be broadcast live on the big screen on Saturday night. The 12-round fight pits WBC Welterweight World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather against WBA Welterweight World Champion Marcos “El Chino” Maidana. In addition to the main event, you’ll also get to see undercard bouts featuring Amir Khan vs. Louis Collazoin, J’Leon Love vs. Marco Antonio Periban and Carlos Molina faces Adrien Broner. Off-kilter rhymer Earl Sweatshirt, a member of the hip-hop collective Odd Future, brings his solo act to the House of Blues on Saturday, in support of his critically-acclaimed debut album “Doris,” which wound up on a slew of best-record-of-2013 lists. Next up for the Boathouse’s Summer Backyard Concert Series, aka Sunday Funday, is hard-rocking Mississippi outfit Saving Abel, which is best known for the hit single “Addiction,” which rose to No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart back in 2008. Founding lead singer Jared Weeks left the band to pursue a solo career late in 2013, but Saving Abel has soldiered on with new vocalist Scotty Austin, of Trash the Brand. So everybody hates Mondays, right? Well don’t be a hater on this Monday, because it’s Cinco de Mayo, which means it’s time for the 17th annual BurroFest at Burro Loco, an outdoor festival featuring Mexican food and cervezas, games, and a full day of live music. The fiesta gets started at 11 a.m. Monday and the music lineup includes: Paperwork at 3 p.m., Josh Brannon Band at 5 p.m., Bullfrog at 7 p.m., Tastes Like Chicken at 9 p.m. and No Limit Duo at 10:30 p.m. There is no admission charge.
